Tour Lake County’s heartwarmingly delicious Hot Chocolate Trail makes its return. Here’s how you can sip, save and discover.

It’s that time of year again. The temps are dropping, leaves are falling, and the coffee shops and restaurants of Lake County are beckoning those who like to sip, shop and repeat to explore some inside enjoyment. There’s no better way to heed that call than to hit the Hot Chocolate Trail that began on, of course, National Chocolate Day, Tuesday, October 28, for those who celebrated.

“The Hot Chocolate Trail runs through Saturday, February 14, so there’s plenty of time to check out our website, download your digital passport, and get started on visiting the 17 participating shops,” Tour Lake County Events and Engagement Manager Elyse Downie suggests. “This is our second year, and we are excited to welcome six new locations on the trail. Our participating shops are excited to share some new creations like salted caramel, blueberry vanilla and Reese’s Peanut Butter hot chocolate. You won’t be getting a generic hot chocolate on this trail.”

After accessing your passport, be sure and check in at each location by scanning the QR code located at the checkout. Once participants earn 1,000 points (nine or ten visits) they’ll earn a free, exclusive #TourLakeCOcoa mug.

“People really enjoyed this last year and so many shops have joined us again this year along with new additions,” Elyse says. “It’s such a great, fun and engaging way to get people out and about to explore Lake County and discover everything we have to offer.”

The idea of the Hot Chocolate Trail came about when Tour Lake County wanted to start a county-wide winter tradition visitors could enjoy during the slower, cozy season. The Hot Chocolate Trail gives people plenty of time to complete the trail, while also finding some new locations to add to their regular routine.

“We wanted to provide something to visitors that they could leisurely enjoy throughout the season while they are out and about enjoying an outdoor activity somewhere in Lake County. There’s always a nearby shop to stop in or attraction to visit while you are on the trail,” Elyse says.

Lake County is home to so many charming towns, shopping experiences and outdoor activities, like hiking, skiing and so much more, that a warm, soothing hot chocolate can only add to your experience. Whether you live here or visit on a weekend getaway, day trip or quick in and out, the Hot Chocolate Trail welcomes everyone to stop in, take a break, and discover local spots.

“The Hot Chocolate Trail provides just another incentive to visit Lake County,” Elyse says. “And depending on which participating shop or restaurant you’re in, you’ll find holiday gift items, experience holiday lighting displays and so much more.
