CLEVELAND (WJW) — Thousands of monarch butterflies will soon flutter and fly through Northeast Ohio as part of their annual southern migration tour. According to Cleveland Metroparks, the best time to observe the mass of migrating monarchs is typically the first three weeks of September, though their migration is heavily affected by weather conditions.
A recent Facebook post from Cleveland Metroparks said the butterflies will be “stopping in many places throughout the park district to roost in the cottonwood trees for shelter,” and to look for updates soon on timing and locations for optimal viewing.
In 2024, a cluster of approximately 200 monarch butterflies formed a roost on the northeast side of the main woodlot at Wendy Park. Monarchs migrate in August and September, flying from their breeding grounds in the northeastern United States and Canada to overwintering sites in Mexico and California.
