Guiding the Shore: Lake County’s Historic Lighthouses

Along the shores of Lake Erie, Lake County’s two historic lighthouses serve as lasting reminders of the region’s maritime heritage. Once essential for navigation, they now draw visitors looking to experience a piece of history alongside some of the area’s most picturesque views.

Fairport Harbor West Breakwater Lighthouse

Fairport Harbor Lighthouse & Marine Museum

The Fairport Harbor Lighthouse, now a marine museum, has a rich history. It was originally built in 1825 and served as a navigational aid for over 100 years. Jonathon Goldsmith, noted architect of the Western Reserved his partner Hiram Wood were charged with its build. The octangular tower and 20 x 34’ one story dwelling included brick and hard stone at a cost of just under $3,000. Unforeseen structural issues arose within a decade or two. The lighthouse was rebuilt in 1871, and the original structure now houses the Fairport Harbor Marine Museum and Lighthouse. A new breakwater lighthouse was constructed in 1925 to replace the original, and the old village lighthouse was saved from demolition by local residents.

The Fairport Harbor Marine Museum and Lighthouse continues to operate, offering tours and exhibits about the history of the lighthouse and Great Lakes maritime history. 2025 marks the 200th anniversary a lighthouse has been on site.

Fairport Harbor West Breakwater Lighthouse

The Fairport Harbor West Breakwater Lighthouse was built in 1925 and sits in Fairport Harbor, Ohio at the mouth of the Grand River.  It was constructed to replace the original Fairport Harbor Lighthouse, which now serves as a marine museum. The original Fairport Harbor lighthouse protected the shore and directed mariners for 100 years before being falling into disrepair.  In June 1917, Congress appropriated $42,000 for the construction of a new breakwater light.  That funding included monies that would be used to demolish the original lighthouse.
