🍷A Region Poised to Pour
M Cellars Winery
From tasting rooms and special events to cool-climate wines shaped by Lake Erie, the Grand River Valley continues to offer visitors a welcoming and memorable wine country experience.
For the first time in eighty years, after almost thirty years of significant sales growth, America’s wine industry is experiencing a major “demand and market shift”, states industry expert Rob McMillan. 2024 sales revenues were down approximately 3.4%, with 2025 expected to follow the decline.
The reasons for this decrease include a grape glut, aging and reduced consumption of Baby Boomers, increased production costs, the growth of hard teas, seltzers and THC-infused beverages and a recent neo-prohibitionist movement.
However, Ohio’s Grand River Valley producers are poised to thrive in this consumer-driven evolution, despite a growing number of local and global competitors. Donniella Winchell, Executive Director of the Ohio Wine Producers Association, states that “Both individually and as a region, the Grand River wineries are bucking the national consumption trends through increased tasting room consumer visitations and sales.”
Looking Ahead
The Grand River AVA is at the high point of its growth, becoming one of the Midwest’s top tourist destinations since its inception in 1983. It offers some distinctive, unique, regional and producer benefits to attract all demographics, including beautiful scenery, friendly people, fine restaurants and excellent wines.
The Grand River is within a day-trip of anywhere in Ohio, with major direct highways from East, West and South. Come meet and interact with winery people and sample wines to take home. Lodging is readily available for those who want to do multi-day tours.
Local wines have won numerous medals in competitions, building a reputation for the Grand River’s exceptional fruit and winemaking. Lake Erie and the Grand River moderate the cool climate, producing fine Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and sparkling wines, all of which currently are in high demand. Sparkling wines specifically increased strongly in sales mid-2025. Baci, Debonne, Ferrante, Grand River Cellars, Kosicek, Laurello, M Cellars and other local producers offer attractive sparkling selections, making a sparkling wine tour simple to plan.
Tony Kosicek, Owner of Kosicek Vineyards, commented “I think if wineries are going to survive the future we need to entice the younger crowd by offering them something with bubbles that is fun to drink.”
The region’s cool climate and short season produces a wide variety of complex, balanced, elegant and nuanced wines, meeting the interest in festive and relevant products. With the growing, long-term trend of consumers drinking less quantity but better quality, the Grand River region is the perfect get away to find numerous wineries producing refined and stylish wines to please your tastes.
“We offer numerous, well-publicized, themed events.” Cindy Lindberg, Owner of Grand River Cellars, tirelessly promotes fun and enjoyable themed events through various trade marketing organizations. Some of these themes include: Sip and Paint, Ugly Christmas Sweater Parties, Yoga at the Vineyard, Winter Warmer Wines and Cocktails and the Ice Wine Festival.
You will be drawn into the Grand River region through your experimentation with a variety of flavors while finding new wine favorites, possibly even falling in love with a previously unencountered winery.
Not a wine lover? Many wineries also offer beers, spirits and cocktails. Wine-based drinks, such as summer wine slushies, are also available. You will be openly welcomed regardless of your tastes while experiencing everything the region has to offer.
We have both long-term pioneers of the industry here and younger winery workers to make everyone comfortable, regardless of your age or wine knowledge. Stay in touch with your favorite wineries through social media, a medium that is captivating and connecting with our newest consumer categories.
The Grand River AVA has many other advantages; new, unique varietals and wine styles, consistent, quality Ice Wine production with good availability and flexible industry people with business acumen, foresight and originality, willing to collaborate for success.
The just-released 2025 US Governmental food guidelines promote that wine in moderation is a natural food that can be part of a healthy lifestyle. Grand River Valley’s graceful, cool climate wines are perfect for daily consumption.
The Grand River Valley has all the factors to succeed in any market conditions. We hope you plan a visit soon, and would love to host your trip and tours.
A Year Worth Celebrating
The Grand River Valley Wine Region is entering 2026 with strong momentum. At the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, local wineries earned a record number of medals, including Best of Class honors. Baci Winery received Best of Class for its 2024 Pinot Gris, and Laurello Vineyards earned Best of Class recognition for a White Blend. Additional Double Gold, Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards further reflected the quality and craftsmanship shaping wines across the region. As tasting rooms welcome visitors throughout the year ahead, this recognition sets an exciting tone for what’s next in the Grand River Valley.

Voices from the Grand River Valley
Cask Three Oh Seven
Winemaker, Mike Koller
“Authenticity is a strong selling point for our region and a vital national trend. We grow and make our products, which is as authentic as it gets, which will outlast temporary, low consumption trends.”
Cask Three Oh Seven also relies on special events to attract consumer visits. Dinner shows and musical theater reviews by Rabbit Run Theater and Julie Anna Gulenko & Co, painting classes, “permanent” jewelry sessions and live music get dedicated buyers on the property, where they can taste and take home favorite selections.
Laurentia Winery
Owners, Gary and Amy Blackie
Amy noted they had one of their largest Saturdays in their history in October, and a sales increase in their wine for the year. Blackie stated, “We stay true to our wine vision, pride ourselves on what we do and focus on that.” A 90 point Wine Enthusiast rating for their 2022 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, is just one of the results.
Amy continued, “The Grand River Valley is really a beautiful place. Our overall experience is enhanced by live music, with lovely event spaces and chef-inspired food. Most new visitors comment how impressed they are and had no idea just how amazing it is here.”.
Stonegate Winery
Owners, Bill and Beth Heinz
“We have never had a decline in sales, and this year looks to be huge. If you have a good product, people will buy it, and the Grand River provides exceptional fruit. We are really picky and focus on bottling the best quality wines, as do all our region’s producers.”
Bill explained, “Our beer and spirits selection satisfies diverse tastes. Our outdoor area is really beautiful, with a very large patio. We have a unique, indoor, 100 person special event room. Our staff is truly outstanding, and Beth and I believe in hard work, both essential factors in success.”
