CLEVELAND — As summer approaches, many people in Northeast Ohio are looking for places to cool off and enjoy the outdoors. With dozens of public beaches along Lake Erie, the region offers a wide range of spots for swimming, sunbathing, kayaking and beachside picnics.
From the mile-long shoreline at Cedar Point Beach in Sandusky to the 35-acre beach at Headlands Beach State Park in Mentor, there are destinations for every type of beachgoer. This guide highlights some of the best beaches in Northeast Ohio to visit this summer.
Cedar Point Beach
Cedar Point Drive, Sandusky
Stretching out along Lake Erie, the mile-long beach and its cooling breezes were Cedar Point’s first attractions more than 150 years ago and very few amusement parks in the world can boast a shoreline as part of the fun! And, best of all, the beach is included with park admission and available to all amusement and water park guests, overnight visitors staying at a Cedar Point property and Season Passholders.
East Harbor State Park Beach
1169 N Buck Road, Lakeside-Marblehead
The park features a 1,500-foot sand beach on Lake Erie. Swimming is permitted in designated areas. Other amenities include modern restrooms, changing rooms, outdoor showers and vending machines. Dogs are not permitted on the swim beach.
Euclid Beach Park
15891 East 159th Street, Cleveland
Once the site of the famous Euclid Beach Amusement Park, Euclid Beach Park now features a 650’ beach with shaded picnic areas, a scenic observation pier and a reservable pavilion. Though it closed in 1969, signs of the amusement park including the shuffleboard area, remnants of the beachside fountain and concrete footers of the Flying Turns roller coaster are still visible.
Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park
301 Huntington Beach Drive, Fairport Harbor
Sandy public beach offering picnic shelter, grills, playground, beach volleyball and canoe/kayak access.
