Elyse Downie, Events & Engagement Manager
Elyse Downie, Events & Engagement Manager shares insight on some unique attractions in Lake County, local eats, and some tips for first-time Lake County, OH visitors.
Elyse has been with Tour Lake County since the summer of 2023, and was born and raised in Ashtabula County. She recently purchased a house in Geneva with her husband and her two cats.
What is the most unique attraction in Lake County that visitors shouldnāt miss?
The Holden Arboretum, as it is the LARGEST Arboretum in the country! Holden holds a special place in my heart as that was one date location my high school sweetheart, and now husband, used to visit all the time! You always leave feeling lighter after experiencing Holden, no matter the season. You can choose your experience, whether thatās exploring the various trails on the ground or rising to new heights on the Canopy Walk or Emergent Tower.
Localās Tip: Visit during the fall and experience the season in one of the most beautiful spots in Lake County!
What local food or drink do you reccommend for visitors to truly experience Lake County?
Iāve been visiting the wineries in the Grand River Valley with my mother for many years now! A few of my favorite spots include Grand River Cellars for their White Fox white wine, Cask 307 for their artisan charcuterie board, and Laurello Vineyards for their peaceful patio. My very first job was actually at Laurelloās, and over the last decade, they have grown more compassionate and dedicated to their visitors. Be sure to grab a bottle of their Connieās Blush (on the sweeter side) or their Peach Riesling (a bit drier), along with one of their wood-fired pizzas!
Localās Tip: There are always events happening in the GRV wine region! Make sure to check out our GRV Events page and book a wine shuttle at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Madison.
What advice would you give first-time visitors to make the most of their trip?
I would encourage first-time visitors to follow along with one of our seasonal bucket lists that highlight many of our local attractions! There is a little something for everyone and you can plan an itinerary around several tasks!
Localās Tip: There are over 39 Lake Metroparks parks to visit!
What aspect of Lake County do you think surprises visitors the most?
There is so much history in Lake County. When you learn about the Unionville Tavern near Madison, Ohio and the connection with the Underground Railroad, or climb the Fairport Harbor Marine Museum and Lighthouse and discover "The light that shone for 100 years," you begin to feel a part of Lake Countyās story during your visit. Just down the street, the Painesville Railroad Museum is dedicated to the restoration of the NYC Painesville Depot. One of my favorite locations is the Madison Seminary that once functioned as a school, hospital, and as housing for the families of those killed in the American Civil War. It is notably one of the most haunted locations in Ohio and first opened in 1846!
