Maple Sugaring Weekends with Lake Metroparks

Maple Sugaring - Earl Linaburg

‍Tap into sweet fun February 28–March 1 and March 7–8 at Lake Metroparks Farmpark. Maple Sugaring Weekends provide an opportunity to discover the history and science behind the production of pure maple syrup while witnessing each step in the process firsthand.

Take a wagon ride to the Woodland Center to see how sap is collected, boiled and processed using both traditional and modern methods. Venture out to the woods to explore the sugarbush, where you can collect sap from maple trees and pour it into a horse-drawn sled. Discover how to make maple syrup at home and see the fascinating process of collecting sap through a vacuum tubing system.

"It takes around 40 gallons of sap to produce just one gallon of syrup," explains Farmpark Event Manager Andy McGovern. "Sap is obtained in a very brief window between winter and spring. It runs out of maple trees when the temperature is around 40 degrees following a night when the temperature drops below freezing."

Go from tap to table by sampling freshly-produced maple syrup, candy and maple stirs (additional fee) and enjoying a pancake breakfast in the cafe (additional fee). Farmpark’s own pure maple syrup and maple candy will be available for sale.

Opportunities to meet farm animals, make a mukuk (bark) bucket, and enjoy the large indoor playground in the Exhibit Hallwill also be available.

Maple Sugaring Weekends are included in Farmpark admission ($7–$9). Farmpark members, children younger than two and active military and their families receive free admission.
