River Jamboree: Invertebrate Immersion

2024 River Jamboree (5) - Tony Gazso

Explore the hidden world beneath the surface of the Grand River at River Jamboree: Invertebrate Immersion.

This free family event, taking place from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 12 at Lake Metroparks' Hidden Valley Park, invites visitors to grab a net, step into the river and explore the freshwater invertebrates and other small creatures that help keep the ecosystem healthy.

From mayfly nymphs and hellgrammites to crayfish and the fish that depend on them, participants will get an up-close look at the river's underwater residents through hands-on activities, games and interactive discovery stations.

"Many of the river's most important creatures are also its smallest," said Lake Metroparks Interpretive Naturalist Abby Mossbruger. "This is a great opportunity for families to get in the water, make discoveries and learn how every creature, big or small, plays an important role.”

The Grand River is one of Ohio's most biodiverse waterways and is designated a State Wild and Scenic River. Partner organizations, including the Lake County Soil and Water Conservation District, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the Ohio Scenic Rivers Program, will be on site with additional activities and educational exhibits.

The event is free, and no registration is required.

Participants should enter through the south entrance to Hidden Valley Park, located at 4872 Klasen Rd. in Madison Township (44057).
